5 Signs Your Car Needs a Service

It’s important to have your vehicle serviced regularly in order to ensure it is safe to be on the roads. Being able to identify some tell-tale indicators that your car has a problem can save you time, allowing you to book your car in to be serviced before it breaks down.

Flashing warning lights

A light will normally illuminate in your car to indicate a problem with the engine, or that the car’s service is due, signalling that you should soon have your engine checked. However, when there is a flashing warning light on your car’s dashboard, this is an indicator of a major problem with one of your car’s systems. If you see a flashing warning light on your car, book it in for a service as soon as possible.

Smoke

You should never see smoke coming from under your car’s hood, and only minimal smoke should be emitted from the exhaust – although water vapor white smoke is natural during the colder months. Smoke from the bonnet of your car could indicate an overheating problem with your engine, whilst excessive smoke from the exhaust could be a sign of an oil leak or a problem with the exhaust system. In both cases, taking your car to a garage is recommended to identify any problems.

Unusual noises

If you notice your car making unusual sounds whilst driving, this is usually an indication of a problem. This can include dragging or droning sounds coming from the wheels, the engine sounding louder than normal, or brakes squealing loudly when applied.

Leaking

Any leaks coming from your car are an indication that you should get your car to a garage to be serviced as soon as possible. You can tell if your car is leaking from stains or spills when you move your car from where it is normally parked – look out for a dark coloured stain for oil or brake fluid leaks, or any unusual leaking from the car exhaust pipe.

Steering problems

Problems with your vehicle’s steering can be extremely dangerous, and should be checked by a trained mechanic immediately. This may include feeling your car favour to one side when in a neutral position, or increased difficulty in trying to steer.
