The Different Types of Tyres
When we’re out driving, it’s important that our tyres are delivering the right results, no matter the conditions. As the only parts of our vehicle that are touching the road, we need to take extra care in ensuring that our tyres’ size and tread pattern are best suited for whatever surface it’s driving across. So, in this article, we’ll mark out the differences between the various key types of tyres, along with some others that you may not have heard before.
Summer tyres
Summer tyres, as the name suggests, are designed for optimal performance in hot, summery conditions, making them an excellent choice in countries where such conditions are all but guaranteed. However, summer tyres only ensure maximum safety in temperatures down to +7°C. This means that in areas such as the UK where seasons can fluctuate heavily and drop below freezing, summer tyres cannot be relied upon all year round.
Typically, summer tyres have a simple block-shape tread pattern which deliver excellent driving and braking performance on wet and dry roads in mild conditions.
Winter tyres
Snow and ice can wreak absolute havoc on the roads. Whether cars are colliding or grinding to a halt, not having the right tyres could well be at the root of the problem.
Winter tyres operate their best in slippery, icy conditions and, as such, should be switched in when the temperature falls consistently below +7°C. They tend to have a more jagged tread pattern with deep, wide grooves running all the way around. On top of this, winter tyres are fused with silica or a similar compound which stop the tyres getting too cold. These elements together help provide better traction and braking performance in cold and icy conditions.
All season tyres
If you live in a country like the UK where temperatures and conditions fluctuate greatly and, more importantly, you don’t want to be switching out your tyres twice a year, then perhaps all season tyres are for you. Although they might not be the top performer in dry, wet or icy conditions, all season tyres can handle all conditions safely and to a good standard. However, all season tyres will perform better in winter than in summer due to the nature of the treads. As they must tackle such a range of conditions, all season tyres have an extremely intricate tread pattern which can adapt to rain, ice or grit with ease.
Run flat tyres
A relatively new concept, run flat tyres allow the car to continue moving safely despite a puncture, and even when there is zero pressure in the tyre. On top of this, their construction guards against tyre blow out.
All terrain tyres
Used almost exclusively on 4x4s, all terrain tyres perform just as well in the mud as they do on the road. The tread pattern is chunky and wide enough to avoid it getting clogged with dirt and snow, while being constructed in such a way that there is flat contact with the road, ensuring even tyre wear.
