How to Store Your Tyres

You can’t predict exactly how long your tyres are going to last. However, it’s possible for you to increase their lifespan by handling and storing them responsibly when they aren’t in use.

Where is best to store my tyres?

Finding somewhere to store your tyres can be tricky. As long as they’re away from heat, direct sunlight, hot pipes, electrical generators and hazardous substances, your tyres will be safe from considerable damage. Ideally they should be kept somewhere that is cool, dry and clean.

If you’re putting them on flat surfaces, ensure there are no sharp or dangerous objects nearby and clean the surrounding area thoroughly. Once the cleaned surface has fully dried, you can set down your tyres. Ideally, try and store them off the ground.

How should I prepare my tyres for storage?

It’s important that you clean your tyres properly with a mild soapy detergent before storing them for any length of time, then leave them to air dry. Use a tyre marker to mark their original location (front right, left rear for example). Wrap each tyre in an opaque, black refuse bag, or you can buy tyre protection bags instead. Try and remove as much air as possible before sealing the bags completely.

How should I store my tyres?

If you’re looking to store your tyres for a short period of time, consider stacking them on top of each other in piles no higher than 1.2 metres (4ft), preferably on pallets. Every 3-4 weeks, rotate the order in which they’ve been stacked to prevent distortion. If you’re storing tyres which are mounted on rims, store them inflated, in a vertical position or in a single row on sturdy shelves.

For longer-term storage, tyres should ideally be stored vertically and on a rack which is approximately 10cm off the ground. If fitted tyres aren’t being used for a considerable amount of time, regularly check the tyre pressure and maintain it at the recommended level.

How should I store cold weather tyres?

Like with normal tyres, mark them with the positions they were in when fitted to your car. You should then remove any stones or large debris from the wheels and clean them with water, then leave to dry. Ensure that any tyres which are fitted on rims are either hung up or laid down, if they’re not fitted on rims, you can leave them to stand up or lie them flat. Store them in a cool, dry place and away from sharp objects or hazardous substances.
