OnStar: In Car Technology at its Best?

From mid-2015, an exciting new personal driving service called ‘OnStar’ will be available across the range of Vauxhall vehicles to those throughout Europe and the UK.

OnStar offers a safer and smarter driving experience to all motorists with a welcome safety net of emergency assistance and connectivity services that no other car manufacturer offers.

OnStar is already being effectively used in the US.  Introduced in 1996 and with a base in Detroit, OnStar provided crucial assistance, like emergency call-outs as well as other help such as help finding and unlocking your car or turn-by-turn navigation.  And following its success, it is now being rolled out throughout various European countries.

Exactly what is OnStar?

With integrated wifi, at the touch of a blue button on the rearview mirror, the car has the ability to able to:

  • Offer help in any emergency situation
  • Help you prepare for the unexpected e.g. roadside assistance
  • Provide directions at the touch of a button
  • Always keep you connected, both in and out of your vehicle
  • Diagnostics to help maintain your car

And all help will be give to you in your native language.

How will it happen?

Pressing the blue button on the rearview mirror allows you to connect to the call center headquarters in Luton, England. Once you are connected to someone (a real person, not a machine!) they will be able to offer their assistance, however you need it. So, whether you’re running low on petrol and need directions to the nearest station, or you require the help from a tow truck, your needs will be met.

Who is it available to?

OnStar will first be offered to customers throughout Europe in 13 countries, including Germany, the UK, France, Italy and Spain, and is exclusive to Vauxhall vehicles at the moment.

Opel CEO, Karl-Thomas Neumann, claims the direct contact will create stronger ties between the customer and the brand as it is people friendly and designed for all to use – not just the technically-minded.  In fact, you don’t even have to be in your vehicle in order to use it! You will still be able to make the call to these services from any phone or via the Vauxhall OnStar App.
