Preparing your car for summer weather
A lot of people will be concerned for the health of their car over winter, but few will give as much thought to preparing their vehicle for summer. Hot weather, dusty roads and taking long trips for days out and holidays can all be extra wearing for your car. To ensure a vehicle is in optimal working condition for the summer months, you should perform some basic checks and maintenance which we shall cover in this article.
Tyres
Tyres and, more specifically, tyre pressure plays an important part in how your vehicle handles, brakes, its fuel consumption and the risk of a tyre blowout. Tyre pressure will steadily decrease over time and so should be checked and topped up periodically to ensure optimum performance and safety. You should always top up tyre pressure when the tyres are cold and, in summer, this can prove hard to achieve. When tyres are hot, like after a summer drive on hot roads, their pressure increases. This means that when they cool down again, they will no longer be at the proper inflation level.
During summer you should try to keep your car cool by storing it in a garage or carport, if possible. You can then accurately measure and pressurise your tyres – including your spare – at home. However, if you need to use the air pump at a petrol station, try to avoid the hottest parts of the day and choose the station which is the shortest drive away.
Cooling system
In summer, your car runs a greater risk of failing due to overheating. To stay at an ideal working temperature, your engine system requires a good level, concentration and condition of coolant. You should check your coolant whilst the engine is cold at least once a year. If it needs changing or topping up, you can buy coolant mixes and do it yourself if you’re confident with cars, or take it to a garage for professional help.
Air conditioning
The use of your air conditioning will skyrocket in summer and so, for comfortable trips, it’s important this system is working properly. If your air con isn’t doing a good job of cooling, it makes noises or smells, this is a sign it needs some alterations which can be easily carried out by a car mechanic.
Oil and other fluid levels
Whilst giving your car a summertime once over, it is worthwhile checking the oil and all other fluid levels. Most fluids – for example, oil, power-steering fluid and washer fluid – can just be topped up if necessary during this check. However, low levels of brake fluid are likely a sign there is a leak in your system or that the brake pads are worn down and professional advice should be sought.
Breakdown kit
Having a well-stocked breakdown kit is important all year round, but if you’re likely going on long drives for trips and holidays in summer, you should double check you have everything you need. Check your spare tyre is in good condition and you have all the tools necessary to change it out. Torches, water, a first aid kit and blanket are also good things to have to hand.
