The World’s Greatest Road Trips

The world is a massive and wonderful place packed full of hordes of excellent scenic roads that prove a driver’s delight, and now that we’re in the full swing of summer 2016 there’s no better time to think about getting out there in your car for a holiday. If you were to Google the best road trips you’d likely find yourself inundated with suggestions, so we’ve put together our top picks to help you out.

Iceland’s Ring Road

Though not the largest of islands, what Iceland lacks in size it makes up for in sheer beauty. The 1339 km road loops round the whole island and allows you to take in absolutely every facet Iceland has to offer. You’ll see lava fields, volcanic craters, pristine fjords, luscious green pastures and, of course, snow-capped mountains that look like they’ve been plucked right out of Middle-earth! A trip to Iceland is a trip of a lifetime.

Outer Hebrides, Scotland

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need to leave the British Isles to find some brilliant roads to drive on. Heading to Scotland for some island-hopping fun is a great way to spend your summer. There are extremes of landscape for you to enjoy, littered with castles and mountains, the route is rugged and beautiful and, when combined with the hospitality of the Hebrideans, makes for one of the world’s greatest road trips.

Black Forest, Germany

Arguably one of Europe’s most famous nature parks and locations, the Black Forest in Germany is an excellent destination for any petrolhead. While some trails through the forest are better than others, the area is well worth a visit regardless – do some research beforehand to make sure you’re not missing out though!

Australia’s Great Ocean Road

For an adventure in the land down under, look no further than Australia’s Great Ocean Road. The scenic road was conceived as a commemoration for the soldiers who died during World War One, and runs 285 km across the coast of Southwestern Victoria through Great Otway National Park. The rock formations at the ‘Shipwreck Coast’ are a particular spectacular highlight of the drive.

Usa 66 route

Route 66, USA

How could we not have Route 66 on this list? Highly regarded as one of if not the most celebrated road in the world, originally Route 66 crossed 8 states and connected Chicago, Illinois to Santa Monica, California. Nowadays the road is split up into sections after the Interstate Highway was introduced, but remnants of the historic route are still around today and attract thousands of visitors every year.
