Used Car Sales Hit Six Year High

Figures now show that 2014 saw the highest annual used car sales in over six years, with the DVLA reporting 6.8million changes of car ownership registered in the UK that year.

The sale of privately used cars has increased by 1.18% overall from 2013, with Greater London seeing the greatest increase in any region with sales up by 2.25% compared to the previous year, likely a reflection of the ever increasing population in London.

These figures have shown the UK to be at a six-year-high for used car sales, now at their highest point since 2008 when 7.21million used vehicles were sold, according to data acquired by Experian.

The motor industry can only be encouraged by the rise in used car purchase, not least because the UK remains one of few countries within Europe to see a rise in sales since the onslaught of the recession. The figures show the closest return to pre-recession figures yet, foreseeing the eventual  end to the economic downturn in the near future. The numbers also suggest a change in the way people are looking at buying cars; thinking beyond the initial cost and more about the monthly charges and general maintenance costs that come with owning a car. Many motor traders have since responded with more flexible car finance and warranty packages, Andrew Ballard, automotive director at Experian, suggests.
