What Happens When my Car is Serviced?
Car services will differ depending on the model of your car and the type of service you are having (interim or full), but generally consist of a series of check to ensure the car is able to run safely and reliably.

It is important to have your car serviced by a professional at a garage, as several components need to be checked that you will not be able to do yourself. This is also an essential cost in order to ensure your car will be able to pass it’s MOT test.
An interim service should be carried out every 6,000 miles, and full services should be carried out every 12,000 miles or once a year.
The interim checks the main components of the car – oil change, basic maintenance checks – to ensure the car is still safe to drive between full services. A full service includes everything an interim service includes, with an additional number of checks that are more detailed, such as wheel alignment and bearing checks. A full service is essential if these components have not been checked in some time according to your vehicles service history book.
The following will be checked and maintained:
- Oil and filter change
- Lights
- Wipers
- Fluid levels – anti-freeze, windscreen wash etc
- Battery condition
- Exhaust system
- Brake pads and fluid
- Suspension
- Air filter replaced
- Spark plugs/fuel filter replaced
- Handbrake
- Tyre tread & pressure
- Wheel alignment & bearing
- Power steering (if applicable)
As well as these checks, cars are also tuned to minimise emissions, and parts are changed when required to be after a certain mileage. These checks are mainly unnecessary for the first three years of a new car, with the exception of changing the engine oil and refilling fluid levels.
